Tiger Woods Arrested on DUI Charge After Rollover Crash in Florida

UPDATED: Tiger Woods has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence following a rollover crash Friday afternoon in Jupiter Island, Florida. No injuries were reported. Woods faces misdemeanor charges and was being held in Martin County Jail for at least eight hours following the incident.

What Happened

The crash occurred just after 2 p.m. near 281 Beach Road on Jupiter Island, close to where Woods lives. According to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek, who spoke at a press conference Friday evening, Woods was driving a dark Land Rover at a high rate of speed when he collided with a pickup truck pulling a pressure cleaner trailer.

The truck driver told investigators he was turning into a driveway on a two-lane road when he looked in his rearview mirror and saw the Land Rover overtaking him at high speed. When the truck driver attempted to get off the road, Woods' vehicle swerved to avoid a collision but clipped the back of the trailer. The Land Rover rolled over onto its driver's side. Woods was alone in the vehicle and crawled out through the passenger door.

Sheriff Budensiek said it did not appear Woods was injured.

DUI Charges and the Breathalyzer

Authorities said Woods showed signs of impairment. He submitted to a breathalyzer test and blew "triple-zeroes" — meaning no alcohol was detected — but refused to submit to a urine test. He was charged with DUI, property damage and refusal to submit to a test, all misdemeanor charges.

The driver of the truck was not injured. No other parties were involved.

This is Woods' second DUI-related arrest. In May 2017, he was found asleep at the wheel in Jupiter, Florida, and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He later pleaded guilty to reckless driving, paid a $250 fine and completed DUI school.

The Golf Context

The arrest comes less than two weeks before the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club — the first major of the 2026 season — where Woods had been weighing a potential return to competitive golf. He had just made his first appearance in more than a year Tuesday in the TGL finals, where his Jupiter Links Golf Club team lost to the Los Angeles Golf Club.

Woods, 50, is a 15-time major champion and has not completed four competitive rounds on the PGA Tour since the 2024 Masters. He spent much of the past year recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon and a back surgery performed in October.

His Masters participation is now in serious doubt. The investigation is ongoing.

A History of Serious Car Crashes

This is not the first time Woods has been involved in a serious vehicle accident.

In February 2021, Woods was severely injured in a single-car rollover crash in Rolling Hills Estates in Southern California. Investigators determined he was driving at least twice the speed limit in a 45 mph zone when his SUV struck a tree. The vehicle rolled several times, leaving Woods trapped inside.

He suffered open fractures to his lower right leg, requiring emergency surgery that included a rod in his tibia and screws and pins in his foot and ankle. He was hospitalized for three weeks. At a later public appearance, Woods said it was 50/50 whether part of his right leg might have been amputated. He underwent at least one additional surgery related to that crash in April 2023.

"It was very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive," a deputy said following the 2021 crash.

Woods was not charged in connection with that accident. Officials said at the time there were no signs of impairment, though the decision not to seek a warrant for blood samples drew scrutiny.

Earlier in his career, Woods crashed a Cadillac SUV into a neighbor's tree in 2009 during a highly publicized personal scandal. After his May 2017 arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence in Jupiter, Florida, he checked himself into a clinic for treatment related to prescription medication.
